This book falls into my “Procedurals” category (series in which each book is about the main character solving a problem). I’m not a fan of procedurals, but I am a huge fan of Mercy Thompson. She is a kick-a$$ female character who can take care of herself, but she doesn’t have to go at it alone. She is married to the Alpha of a werewolf pack and, although the pack has some issues, they pull together as a team. I give this book 4 stars.
Here’s a breakdown…

What is this book about?
Christie (Adam’s ex-wife) is in danger and comes to stay with Adam and Mercy. It seems Christie has caught the attention of a volcano god who doesn’t understand when a relationship is over. Never one to have one problem at a time, in addition to dealing with an insane volcano god, a fae Gray Lord wants the walking stick that Mercy gave to Coyote. (A minor problem next to the angry volcano god). The pack comes together (despite Christie’s efforts to cause animosity) with Coyote and Mercy’s half brother and Stefan(a local vampire that has a crush on Mercedes) and defeat (but not kill) the Volcano god. Mercy gives back a walking stick to the fae, but it again returns to her at an opportune moment (with special Coyote enhancements). The pack also takes two new members, a submissive wolf and a tibicena (the volcano gods pet dog/people).
What did I think about this book?
I loved it. The pacing of this story is amazing, 1/3 of the book you start hitting what feels like the climax and it keeps going from there.
Mercy is just an amazing character. I did wish she was more assertive with Christie. I also liked Honey, she lost her husband in the last book.
-I can’t wait until the next one!
-Possible plot point for next book: Zee’s son Tad is on the fae reservation and is not able to leave. Perhaps the next book will be Mercedes getting him out.
